THE life of a highly-regarded headmaster is to be celebrated with a Mass at St Patrick’s RC Church, Huddersfield, at 7pm on Tuesday, January 14, the first anniversary of his death at the age of 91.

Father Tony Baxter was headmaster of the former St Gregory’s RC Grammar School at Bradley Bar between 1964 and 1972, having come to teach at the school in 1958. He played a seminal role in the creation of the first RC co-educational grammar school in the country on the site of what is now All Saints Catholic College.

In those days, before the creation of a Catholic comprehensive school in Halifax, pupils from Halifax, Elland, Brighouse, Rastrick and Fixby were educated at St Gregory’s.

In his eight years as head he was much-loved and highly-repected as teacher and priest in the community.

All who knew Father Baxter as a teacher, head teacher, colleague or friend are invited to attend the celebration. Refreshments will be served after the Mass.
