‘Put road safety first’ – appeal
A ROAD safety watchdog has expressed its concern over plans for housing development on Halifax Road, Brighouse.
Developer Barratt Homes has proposed to build 70 executive style homes and 60 town houses of family homes on land neighbouring Kershaw’s Garden Centre.
The plans are only proposed at the moment and no plans are submitted. But members of Brighouse Road Safety Committee have expressed their concerns about the possibility of building more residential homes on a road which already has major traffic issues.
A community workshop was held at Brighouse High School last month and people were invited to view the plans and have their questions answered.
Chair of the committee, Ann Rutherford, and vice-chair Pat Oates attended the workshop.
Mrs Rutherford said: “Safety measures on that stretch of road are definitely going to have to be a major part of the planning application.”
“I have asked that the developer takes on board the safety aspect and I have approached Brighouse High School and suggested the students do a survey of what they see on Halifax Road because the students walk from the school to the sixth form centre. A younger pair of eyes might see something we don’t.”
Councillor Colin Stout (Ind, Brighouse) who also attended the workshop, said there were four schools within that area with 1500 pupils.
“Further development could be disastrous if it isn’t planned properly,” he said.
“There is a problem with speeding traffic but because they are not always injury accidents they are not recorded and I am still waiting for the results from the skid test on the road surface which were taken last year.
“We do get a police van with a camera parked on Elland Road during the morning rush-hour and I wondered if we could request he park in Halifax Road to deter speeding on there.
“The speed indication device from Calderdale Council was used and they gave it a red priority which does call for police action along the 30mph road.
“I just feel the high visibility of the police van could help as a deterrent. I am still requesting the skid test results but I am not getting the information.”
Coun Stout said the average speed of vehicles travelling along the road was 36mph rising to 40mph according to checks carried out in November.
He said he was discussing with the planners the possibility of getting a 106 agreement to provide some form of road safety measures along the road.
