Post office open after ram-raid
A VILLAGE post office closed since the premises were ram-raided in January has reopened for business this week.
A trail of destruction was left behind when ram-raiders tried to flee with the cash machine from Hipperholme post office in Leeds Road. The premises were then boarded up and a notice was displayed saying the business was closed until further notice.
Coun Colin Raistrick (Ind, Hipp/Light), said he was pleased the post office was open after being closed for six weeks.
"It has been missed by people in the village, particularly elderly residents," he said. "They have had to use other post offices in the area which is not always convenient." The cash machine that was the thieves' target has not been replaced.
Extensive damage was caused when a vehicle was driven into the front of the building in the early hours of January 23. The raid was unsuccessful but it left behind a huge hole and bricks, stone and glass were strewn about the path and road.
