Petition set up to stop alcohol sales

OUTRAGED residents have set up a petition to stop a Rastrick shop from selling alcohol.

Calderdale Council has received an application from Londis, the former Big Saver shop, at Highfield Road, to supply alcohol between 7am and 11pm Monday to Saturday and between 8am and 11pm on a Sunday.

But nearby residents have set up a petition, which has collected more than 600 names in just over a week, to stop the application.

Jennifer Binns who has started the campaign said: “The applicant is applying for a licence until 11pm, it may as well be a public house. We have just cleaned this area up and if this goes through we will have teenagers trying to get drink and hanging around outside the shops until after 11pm.

“We already have two other shops which sell alcohol, with the Co-operative and Highfield newsagents, we don’t need a third.

“You get youngsters asking people to go in and buy them cigarettes and alcohol and some people do it. There will be more anti-social behaviour which means more work for the police and the council men who come the next morning.

“We have got the backing from the elderly and the younger ones in the area who have all objected.”

Fellow resident Tracy Bailey said she encouraged people who didn’t want a third shop in the row selling shops to sign the petition. “I feel intimidated enough when I’m bringing my children to the shop because there is a large crowd of teenagers outside and if this licence goes through it will make things worse,” she said.

Petitions are available to sign in all of the shops along the row, Field Lane Primary School and at the Sure Start Centre next door. One is also available in Rastrick Library.

Calderdale Council has extended the objection period by a week to take into account the fact that the notice is not displayed constantly, to February 23. Write to The Licensing Officer, Safer and Stronger Communities, Licensing Unit, Westgate House, Halifax, HX1 1PS.
