One pub closes - another reopens
I WAS shocked when I called John and Catherine Byrne at The Star down at Bridge End, who told me they were finishing packing up, the doors were shut and the pub was closed for business.
"It's just one of those things. We have tried our best but we have to put ourselves first. We have been offered another pub at Thornton, Bradford. It's called the Wellington," said John.
The couple had been in the pub for 17 months and it's been an eventful time as they got married during that period.
I wish them every success and fingers crossed Clifton Properties can find someone to get the pub back open!
ONE of the oldest pubs in the Brighouse area has reopened.
The Punch Bowl at Bailiff Bridge, had been closed for the past seven months, when long-serving landlady Kate Grundy left.
Enterprise Inns have appointed a new tenant Matthew Parkinson, whose family also have the licence at The George Hotel in Commercial Street, Brighouse.
The pub, which first opened in the 1800s, has been undergoing some internal renovations and a thorough clean over.
Kate Grundy, who is now stewardess at Rastrick Bowling and Social Club, was there for 15 years. In later years she said she was battling continual rent rises and falling numbers, although on the farewell night the place was packed to the door.
Commenting on the Punch Bowl reopening she said: "I hope it all goes well for them and they can make a go of it."
ALAN Rawlinson is still running the Royal Oak at Lower Edge. The pub is up for sale and despite having plenty of interest no one has put any offers in at present.
"I think with the economy as it is people aren't wanting to take pubs on," said Alan.
"But I am still here and the pub is still open and we are just plodding along."
For all you singers, there is karaoke at the pub every Friday.
