Visitors to St John the Divine Church at Coley were treated to a bat walk around the church grounds.
On a late summer evening 20 people gathered to listen to Chris Sutcliffe, countryside officer with Calderdale Council.
Armed with bat detectors, families set off for a walk to find and see bats and they certainly were not disappointed.
Dr Allan Dowson, co-ordinator of the 500 years celebration group at the church, said: “ We learned a lot about the different types of bats (we were pleased to hear that, thankfully, there are no vampire bats in this country), their habitat and lots more, it was fascinating.
“Estimates of the number seen varied from 20 – 30 to about a hundred (seen by the children). It was amazing to see them flying past, alerted by the bat detectors. It was an enjoyable evening and are planning more events with Chris.”
