New pharmacy at surgery approved

A BRIGHOUSE surgery has been given the green light to provide a late chemist despite concerns over parking.

Councillors unanimously agreed that having a late chemist, the only one in Brighouse, would provide a valuable service to the public.

Councillor David Hardy (Lib Dem, Elland) said: “The information that has been given to us is valuable because we have found out that the pharmacy will have extended opening hours which is needed. Anyone living within a family that needs medication and needs it urgently will know how frustrating it is when you have to try and find one that is open. I welcome your argument.”

GP Tehmina Parekh spoke on behalf of the application at Calderdale Council’s planning committee. She said it would improve patient care and experience and will be providing a cost effective service.

She said that many patients have had to travel to Halifax and Huddersfield to find a pharmacy with extended hours.

Councillors were told that two petitions had been received for the application. One contained 239 signatures in favour of the proposal and the other had 162 signatures objecting. There was also three letters of objections and comments had been received from Councillor Scott Benton (Con, Brighouse).

The main concern was parking but Dr Parekh said they had already decided to move the disabled parking spaces to the main car park which would improve access and an agreement had been made with a neighbouring property for five to eight spaces for staff parking. The three spaces which would be next to the new pharmacy would still be available.

Councillor Hardy also noted that the surgery would have the same number of spaces for patients as Rydings Hall Surgery which is situated opposite in Church Lane.

Another concern was the amount of extra deliveries, because there was already a pharmacy on the opposite side of the road. But Dr Parekh assured councillors there would be no extra deliveries.

Councillors agreed that it was a very well spoken argument.
