New traffic system helps to save seconds at junction

A £300,000 traffic system installed at Hipperholme crossroads has helped to save time.

The MOVA (Microprocessor Optimised Vehicle Actuation) system was implemented last year in a bid to ultimately ease the traffic congestion at the busy junction. The results were taken before the system was installed in May 2012 and again in September last year.

Travelling towards Hipperholme crossroads (from the Halifax direction to Leeds) traffic on the A58 eastbound between 7.20am and 9.25am saved a total of four seconds. Motorists travelling along the A644 southbound, down Denholmegate Road towards the crossroads, saved 83 seconds, and in the opposite direction from Brighouse towards the crossroads along the A644 northbound there was a saving of 19 seconds.

The results were also taken for the same three roads between 10.35am and 3.25pm. Along the A58 there was a saving of six seconds, the A644 southbound 41 seconds and the A644 northbound 16 seconds.

There was some good savings between 4.30pm and 6pm. The A58 eastbound saw a saving of nine seconds, the A644 southbound 63 seconds and the A644 northbound 28 seconds.

Councillor Colin Raistrick (Ind, Hipp/Light) said the queues did seem a lot lower than normal. “I think if you are saving a minute coming down Denholmegate Road it is a saving. I don’t know if it is worth that amount of money. But there is some improvement.”
