My Mai-Rita ... the life and soul
THE funeral of a 53-year-old Brighouse woman who died of a brain haemorrhage took place last Friday.
Mai-Rita Craig was on her way to work for the DHSS in Halifax when she collapsed. She never recovered consciousness and was put on a life support machine at Calderdale Royal Hospital.
Her partner of 20 years, Peter Fitzpatrick, and her two brothers, Philip and Joe, made the agonising decision to turn the machine off 24 hours later.
Peter, who lived with Mai-Rita in Glyndon Court, Rastrick, last saw her when he left for work at 5.30am on Monday - January 4. "I took her a cup of tea in bed, gave her a kiss and she said 'take care on the roads they will be icy'. Those were the last words I heard."
He described Mai-Rita as the life and soul of the party. He said she made friends everywhere and no one ever had a bad word to say about her. "I loved her to bits and will be lost without her," he said.
Mai-Rita helped Peter bring up his two sons, Simon, who is now 33, and 31-year-old Damian and the couple often talked about getting married.
Mai-Rita attended the former St Joseph's Junior School and St Thomas More, both in Halifax, and lived in Siddal and Exley before moving to Brighouse.
Peter has received a lot of support from family and friends and would like to thank everyone at their local pub which was the Shears Inn, Paris Gates, Halifax for their support.
Her funeral took place at St Mary's RC Church, Halifax.
