Memorial service for ex-teacher Margaret Wood

A MEMORIAL service will be held for former Rastrick tea-cher Mrs Margaret Wood at St Matthew's Church, Rastrick.

Mrs Wood, who was known and loved by generations of children in Rastrick, died aged 93 last month.

She was a pupil at Carr Green School, Rastrick, and later joined the teaching staff there. The daughter of Frederick Southern JP, Mrs Wood was also a lecturer for the Workers' Educational Association, a Labour Party worker and a preacher with the Congregational Church.

After leaving Carr Green School she went to Brighouse Girls’ Grammar School, where she achieved both academically and on the sports field. She gained a degree at Leeds University where she studied French and history.

After teaching in Guildford and at Holme Valley Grammar School during the Second World War she moved to Carr Green Junior School, Rastrick, in 1953 and stayed for 25 years. During her career she taught standard three – now known as Year Five.

Up to the age of 90 she had spent most of her life in Rastrick. She was the widow of the late Cyril Wood and she loved Rastrick and the people in the community.

Her only daughter Catherine said her mother was deeply proud of Yorkshire and its heritage.

“Her teaching inspired many and the fact that so many of her students kept in touch with her is a testament to the influence she had on their lives,” said her daughter.

For the last four years Mrs Wood lived with her daughter and son-in-law Jim in London.

She also leaves two grandchildren and a great granddaughter.

Her funeral service was held in London and her memorial service at St Matthew’s will take place on July 17 at 12.30pm. All are welcome to attend.
