Meet a chef with a taste for adventure

LEE Rushforth is never happier than when he's out in the great outdoors, walking in the hills and climbing mountains.

But he admits his latest expedition will present his toughest challenge so far. Lee, aged 26, and his friend Roanna Vickers are planning to walk the length of the Pyrenees, crossing glaciers and climbing mountain trails.

The charity trek, in August, will take more than two months and Lee is raising funds for British Mountain Rescue. "By the time we have finished we will have climbed more than five times the height of Everest!" said Lee, of Highmoor Crescent, Clifton.

"We will be walking the full length of the mountain range between France and Spain on some of the highest trails so we will need to use crampons and ice axes."

Lee and Roanna, who lives in Shropshire, will cross the Pyrenees by the Haute Randonee – a high pass through the mountains which traverses the stunning scenery of two national parks. They will be wild camping most of the time with the occasional night in a mountain hut or hostel. The route will begin in Hendaye on the Atlantic coast and end in Banyuls-sur-mer on the Mediterranean and includes many famous peaks such as Vignemale at 3,298 metres and Pic de Aneto, the highest in the Pyrenees at 3,404 metres.

(Full story and more pictures in the Brighouse Echo 18/2/2010) It’s had one of its busiest winters on record because of the bad weather and has been called in to help the other emergency services numerous times. Being shown round the Ogwen Valley centre was a real eye-opener. I hope that, by doing this trek, I can help to raise the profile of the service as well as funds for it.”

When he returns from the Pyrenees, Lee hopes to find work in an outdoor pursuits centre but his ultimate ambition is to set up his own business leading mountain walks and treks.
