IT has only been open for nine months, but Mark’s Fry-Days is in the running for a national award.

The chippy in Lightcliffe Road, Brighouse, is currently in the top three in the UK for The Choice Chip Awards and votes are still coming in thick and fast.

The shop is run by Mark Keenan who previously worked for Calderdale Council’s youth and community service. But after 22 years he decided it was time for a change and set up his fish and chip business.

“We have a very good local following so I thought I would give it a try,” he said. “We have only been open for nine months and people are coming from all over to try our fish and chips. You could sort of say we have become a local brand.”

And his customers are certainly showing their support for Mark. “We have had some of our customers coming in for about 20 or 30 cards so the competition is getting a bit serious. Everyone in the area is talking about it and they are all rallying round for Brighouse.

“The support we have already received has been absolutely unbelievable. I have even got voting cards from people who have visited from Ireland. It is crazy.

“But my main aim is to put Brighouse on the map and encourage people to come and visit the town. Hopefully this will have a knock on effect on other businesses so we will all benefit from it.”

The contest is being run to celebrate Chip Week, which takes place between February 20 and 26. The winner of the award will be announced during that week.

People can still vote online at www.chips.lovepotatoes.co.uk until February 19. Votes can be cast by filling in a card from Mark’s Fry-Days until February 9.
