Landmark pub boarded up – then attacked

A ONCE thriving Brighouse town centre pub has closed.

Doors and windows at The George in Commercial Street were boarded up at the end of last week. Tables and benches outside have been turned on their side.

A 'To Let' sign went up outside the premises in April when landlord Chris Egan said the smoking ban had hit the business hard.

He said the pub, owned by Enterprise Inns, had been on the market for about 12 months.

In recent weeks the pub, which also offered accommodation, had stopped serving foods and Saturday night entertainment was also on hold.

Mr Egan, who was back at the pub for a second stint, had been working there for about three years. He had hoped to build up trade by looking at different options.

A 20-year-old Rastrick man has been arrested after damaging the cellar door at The George.

The attempted break-in took place between 5am and 8am last Friday, the day after it was closed and boarded up.
