Helping to deal with hate

VOLUNTEERS are needed to join a panel that will help the police and their partners improve the way they handle hate crimes.

Calderdale’s Race/Hate Scrutiny panel is set to merge with the area’s Homophobic and Disability Scrutiny panel in a bid to encourage more people to become members.

In the past, the two divisions met separately at Halifax Police Station, but a pilot scheme is now underway which will enable members to meet monthly in each of the four Neighbourhood Policing areas which include Brighouse and the Lower Valley.

Sgt Sarah Brown, community engagement officer for Calderdale’s Neighbourhood Policing teams, said: “Previously members have mainly come from Halifax, but we need to fully represent the whole of the Calderdale community.

“By rotating the meetings in different areas we hope to attract people who wouldn’t have previously considered becoming members because they live or work outside of Halifax.”

The panels are made up of representatives from statutory and voluntary organisations, as well as members of the public.

They scrutinise police reports and consider how the police deal with those involved and how they deal with local issues. The police are then asked to account for their actions and report back to the panel at the following meeting.

Sgt Brown, who previously worked within Calderdale division’s Safeguarding Unit, said anyone wanting to become a member will receive full training.
