A TEAM of volunteers mucked in to help give the Calder and Hebble Navigation a spring clean.

The volunteers, as young as three-years-old, joined together to help clean up the area outside Prego in Brighouse.

The clean up was organised by Lidia Shinwell from Prego and nearly two skips of weeds and debris were collected.

The area on the opposite side of the canal owned by developer Bill Ibberson was also targeted by a group of eight volunteers who attempted to clear up the patch.

But Lidia said it needed more manpower and Mr Ibberson has agreed to get in the diggers in a bid to clear up the land in the next two weeks.

Also helping on the day was the Canal and River Trust, Pennine Canoe Club, The Calderdale Navigation Society came with their barge and there was support from Sainsbury’s, Prego and Blakeley’s fish and chip shop who supplied refreshments.

Lidia said: “There was a really good atmosphere and it was great to see some of the youngsters doing some community work. I am going to print off some certificates to show that they have given their time for a community project.

“Everybody was happy and it gives you a feel good factor. We all really enjoyed it and mucked together. We obviously identified more work that needs to be done but Mr Ibberson is planning to deal with that which we will all benefit from.

“We are pleased with how it went and are planning another for spring next year. Anyone interested should call 01484 715566.”
