A £250,000 school project that will benefit children with learning and physical disabilities has been opened by Paralympian Hannah Cockroft.

The double gold medalist from the London Paralympic Games unveiled the new hydrotherapy pool at Highbury School, Rastrick, after a two year campaign to raise the money for the refurbisments.

The school and parents group Friends of Highbury which formed in October 2010 have been raising the money so the 30-year-old swimming pool at the school on Lower Edge Road could be modernised and brought up to modern day standards.

Families, friends, governors, LEA representatives and fund raisers were invited to the opening. Assistant head teacher Nicky Moorman said: “The smiles on the faces of the children as they use the pool say it all. Swimming can help disabled children to be physically healthy. It helps to develop confidence, self-esteem and independence. The school’s hydrotherapy pool allows students with very complex learning difficulties and associated physical disabilities, to access a warm, stimulating environment where they can develop their own movements and mobility in the water.

“The pool and changing areas have had a complete refurbishment including remodeled changing rooms with specialist changing beds and hoist facilities for wheelchair users and disabled user wet rooms. Sensory lighting and music equipment provides a state of the art, stimulating learning environment for our pupils with the most complex needs.

“Highbury School would like to thank everyone who has been involved in the achievement of this dream on behalf of all staff, pupils and their families.”
