Funeral for 'gentleman John'

THE funeral of a pensioner killed while walking his dogs will take place on Monday (Jul 19).

John Holmes, 75, died after being hit by a blue Volkswagon Golf in Bradford Road, Brighouse, on July 4. One of his dogs also died.

Mr Holmes, who was described as a 'kind, thoughtful gentleman' was the principal carer for his wife, Maureen, who is said by neighbours to suffer from Alzheimer's disease. He was also a step-dad to Alan and Janet.

There will be a funeral service and cremation at Park Wood Crematorium at 3pm. Friends are asked to meet at the crematorium.

Flowers should be sent to Co-operative Funeralcare, 44, Huddersfield Road, Brighouse, or donations can be made to The Alzheimer's Society. An inquest into his death was opened last week.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the fatal accident which happened at 4.07pm near the junction with Russell Way. Mr Holmes was hit by the car travelling from the direction of Bailiff Bridge towards the centre of Brighouse as he walked towards the central refuge.

A 31-year-old man from the Huddersfield area was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He is on police bail. Any witnesses to the incident are asked to contact Halifax CID on 0845 6060606.
