Four held in corner shop murder inquiry

POLICE investigating the brutal murder of shopkeeper, Gurmail Singh, in Cowcliffe have made more arrests.

A 17-year-old from Fartown was being questioned yesterday in connection with the murder of Mr Singh. He is one of four people still in custody on suspicion of murdering the Cowcliffe shopkeeper on the night of Saturday, February 20.

On Monday night detectives were given more time to question another 17-year-old from Fartown and a 20-year-old from Crosland Moor arrested on Sunday and a 17-year-old from Bradley who was arrested on Monday.

A 17-year-old from Sheepridge, who was arrested on Saturday on suspicion of murder and robbery, has been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Two youths, aged 17 and 18, who were arrested last week, have been released without charge.

Meanwhile an A-level student, who was one of the three arrested last week, has appeared at Huddersfield Magistrates' Court charged with robbing Mr Singh with another unknown person at the store on February 18.

The 17-year-old was remanded in custody and is due to appear before magistrates on Tuesday.

The horrific attack happened during a robbery on February 20 at Cowcliffe Convenience Store in Cowcliffe Hill Road, near Fixby.

Mr Singh was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary but died in the early hours of February 21. He was hit on the head nine times with a weapon, probably a hammer.

He was a popular member of the Sikh community in Huddersfield and officials of the Sikh Temple in Springwood have offered a reward leading to the conviction of his killers. They have put up 1,000 as a reward to try to help the police investigation.

An 'information seek' was carried out in the Cowcliffe area at the weekend and Det Supt David Pervin thanked all those who had offered information to officers conducting the inquiry.

Anyone with information which could assist officers and help identify those responsible is asked to contact West Yorkshire Police on 0845 6060606 or ring Crimestop-pers on 0800 555111.
