Explosion of colours at Christmas switch on
Hipperholme Christmas light switch on by PC Nick Bamforth.
A BURST of colour exploded at the heart of Hipperholme as the Christmas tree lights were switched on.
Residents, shopkeepers and councillors gathered at the junction of Leeds Road and Wakefield Road as the lights were switched on by community beat officer, PC Nick Bamforth of the Lower Valley Neighbourhood Policing Team.
At the switch on ceremony they sang ‘All Come All Ye Faithful’ accompanied by Paul Brooke on the cornet before Rev Patrick Taylor dedicated the tree lights.
After the switch on people gathered in Christ Church, Hipperholme, for Christmas carols and refreshments. Tea and coffee was provided by Church Together in Hipperholme and Lightcliffe
Chris Robinson, a member of the leadership team at the church which organises the Christmas lights switch on, said it was attended by more than 100 people. “There has never been so many people. There was a lot of new faces and it was lovely to see so many people supporting the event.
“Rev Taylor blessed the figures of Joseph and Mary which are going to be displayed in the different shops in Hipperholme in the windows for two days at a time.
“Before ending up in the crib at Christ Church to be blessed at the crib service.
“It was started for the first time last year and people do go round the shops and look for the figures in the windows.
“The weather was good. It wasn’t windy as it has been in the past. There was a fantastic atmosphere and everyone appeared to have a brilliant night.”
