Estate's play area plans taking shape

TRAMPOLINES, hurdles, a rowing machine and an exercise bike will be alongside allotments, fruit trees and a wildflower area at a new children's play area at Lightcliffe.

There will also be crawling tunnels, a cycle path, ornamental boulders, and a sand area in the environmentally-friendly park being created off Bentley Avenue, Lightcliffe.

Two years ago, residents and children asked if the land could be used to provide a safe area for children to play. And now members of the Stoney Tenants' and Residents' Association, who have organised the campaign, are delighted progress has been made.

Tenders are being submitted for the work and within the next few weeks they hope a start date for the work will be announced.

The association, supported by Calderdale Council and other organisations, has obtained lottery funding towards the playground where children will be able to play in a safe environment rather than near busy roads on the estate.

A recent open day, supported by council officials and play rangers, was held on the land. Visitors were given an idea of how the area would be developed, when drawings of the proposals were on show

The scheme was given the thumbs up by children and a competition is being organised inviting pupils at Cliffe Hill Community Primary School, Lightcliffe, to suggest a name for the area.

Residents are hoping Marshalls of Southowram will provide a stone boulder which can incorporate a plaque featuring the name of the park.

"We are really pleased with the progress that has been made," said committee member Mrs Janine Germain. "At times we were worried we weren't getting anywhere but now we feel the children will soon have a new play area."

The park, which is expected to cater for toddlers through to early teenagers, will be locked at night.

The plans will also be available at the residents' association's next open meeting on July 13 at Laburnum Grove Community Centre, Lightcliffe at 6.30pm, when committee members hope people will call in to find out more.
