Disabled toilet to be provided at bus station but no others

Disabled people will be able to use a toilet at Brighouse bus station.

Modifications will be carried out to the existing staff toilet and a Radar lock fitted so it can be used by disabled people and further signs will be erected to direct people to the nearest public toilet in Thornton Square.

But Councillor Colin Stout (Ind, Brighouse) who has been campaigning for years to get the toilet block re-opened in Ganny Road, next to the bus station, says he is frustrated with the lack of progress.

“The funding to even carry out this work is still to be identified.

“Then they have decided to erect signs directing people to the toilets in Thornton Square . But what is the point when they close at 6pm. I will be asking Calderdale Council to open them until 10pm.

“They will also have signposts directing them to council buildings but the Lawson Road offices will close tomorrow and then the council is proposing to close the Customer First office two days a week too, so we will be directing them to a closed building.

“This is extremely frustrating because it doesn’t appear to have been thought out.

“I will still be pushing for the other toilet block to be open. I feel there is a strong need for us to have public toilets in the town centre. We are not asking for anything fancy.

“Although this is a step in the right direction it is still not the solution we are looking for. We want community toilets people can access 24 hours, seven days a week,” he said.

A date is yet to be agreed when the work will start.
