Decision day for controversial housing scheme

A CONTROVERSIAL scheme that could result in up to 160 new homes being built at Hipperholme will be considered on Tuesday.

Anxious residents are meeting this weekend to draw up battle plans opposing the scheme which planning officers have recommended should go ahead.

Tumble drier manufacturers Crosslee plc wants to use land at its Hipperholme factory for new homes – but for houses to be built the status of the land needs to change from industrial to residential. And many people in the area feel there are already sufficient homes available.

Proposals are for a maximum of 160 homes to be built including a new access on to the site from Spout House Lane.

Members of the planning committee will be told that 35 letters of objection including a petition signed by more than 60 people had been received along with 56 letters of support.

He understood the situation the company was in and that money was needed for the site and he said the planning committee was facing a very difficult decision.

“Ideally I would like to see this deferred until after the General Election when there might be different rules – but I also realise this won’t help the company,” he said.

Bolehill Park resident Mr David Lowther said it was important residents’ views were considered.

“A meeting is being held this weekend when we will decide who our spokesperson will be at the meeting. I’m expecting a good number of residents to attend,” he said. “We certainly don’t want homes on this site.”

Residents did not feel there was a need to change the existing use of the land from industrial to residential.
