A COFFEE morning and sale has helped to raise more than £1,000 for Haiti.

Rev Edward Holmes, a retired Methodist Minister, raised £668 with his annual sale at Central Methodist Church, Brighouse, and another £470 in donations from individuals who wanted to help, bringing the final total to £1,138.

This money will help individual families and through them other families in need in the area to either pay for school fees, or food and medical supplies or even to establish a small business.

Mr Holmes said: “People were very generous and often gave more money than the amount of items they had bought. Normally we raise around £700 but to raise more than £1,000 in this economic climate was fantastic.”

Haiti - the poorest country in the western hemisphere - was torn apart by the largest earthquake to hit the country for 200 years.

Two years on and half a million people are still living in tented accommodation and the majority of the collapsed buildings remain uncleared.

Much of the reconstruction work being carried out to hospitals and clinics and schools is being done by the Churches and charities in Haiti but none of the government buildings have yet been replaced, severely limiting the infrastructure of the country’s administration.
