Cliffe Avenue in council’s top 20 jobs to be done

Implementing parking restrictions on a residential road is one of the top 20 priorities with Calderdale Council.

Residents of Cliffe Avenue, Lightcliffe, have been campaigning for the restrictions in a bid to help road safety at its junction with Stoney Lane and prevent people from parking too close to the road end.

Councillor Colin Raistrick (Ind, Hipp/Light) said the council has 139 outstanding requests for residents’ parking and waiting restrictions throughout Calderdale but that Cliffe Avenue was in the top 20 of its priorities.

“What residents need to do to get it into the top ten is keep the pressure on. It is unlikely that the work will be carried out before 2014/15. I realise everybody would like it doing as soon as we can.”

Residents said money appeared to be getting spent elsewhere.

Councillor Raistrick added: “It costs thousands of pounds for a traffic order to be put in, then putting the signs up and putting down the road markings. There is then the consultation and what started as a tin of paint job turns into thousands of pounds. If I could do it myself then I would.”

Councillor Graham Hall (Con, Hipp/Light) said residents had done a lot of work to bring it a successful conclusion. “I do hope it can be worked on.”

Head of Planning and Highways, Geoff Willerton, said: “Calderdale Council receives a large number of requests about residents’ parking and waiting restrictions. To ensure that funding is directed where the need is greatest, we have criteria to prioritise work.

“We take into account the number of people affected, the location and type of road affected, the impact on the local economy, safety implications, accident records and the wider effect of any changes. We will review the replacement of road markings at Cliffe Avenue in accordance with these criteria. We are unable to provide any cost details at this stage.”
