The seeds have been sown for a pioneering home-grown food scheme which could transform Brighouse.
More than 40 people attended a public meeting at Central Methodist Church, Brighouse, to find out more information about the Incredible Edible scheme.
Incredible Edible started in Todmorden in 2008 with the aim of using public spaces such as roadside verges, roundabouts and wasteland to grow food for all to eat.
One of the founders of the scheme, Pam Warhurst, was at Monday’s meeting, called by Brighouse Business Initiative, to explain how Incredible Edible could work for the town.
Member Steven Lord said: “We had an excellent meeting and there was some very positive feedback.
“Pam Warhurst is so enthusiastic about the scheme and her message is very encouraging.
“We know it’s going to take some time for the scheme to develop but it’s worth remembering that it started in a small way in Todmorden with just a few herb beds and has grown from there.”
The meeting decided that a committee should be formed to take the scheme forward and that the next step would be to create a ‘propaganda garden’ to demonstrate what can be achieved.
Mr Lord said: “We believe that people are keen to engage with the idea of finding out where their food comes from and in the nutritional benefits of home-grown food. The timing could not be better with all the recent food scares.
“The council no longer has the resources to maintain grass verges or spruce up wasteland. We could earmark suitable sites and take it from there. Obviously there is a lot of work to do and we will need support from the community but we are pleased so far.”
