Campaigners celebrate health centre verdict

RESIDENTS who campaigned to keep Rastrick Health Centre open held a celebration at Ward Court, Rastrick.

The evening, which was attended by around 50 people, was organised by Carr Green and Crowtrees Community Action Group and Rastrick Cares. Bookmarks carrying the motto ’Getting Together To Make A Difference’, were given to guests to acknowledge their work with the campaign.

People living in Rastrick started the campaign when the Calderdale Primary Care Trust (PCT) announced its plans to build a new health centre at Birds Road, Brighouse. Proposals were for the new building to replace the existing health centre in Lawson Road, along with GPs’ surgeries at Church Lane, the Rydings and Rastrick Health Centre.

But people in Rastrick did not want to lose the facilities at the health centre in Chapel Croft and they objected to the proposals. As a result the PCT had a rethink and agreed the Rastrick Health Centre should remain.

“We felt the success of the campaign was worth celebrating,” said Mrs Christine Beal, chairman of the Carr Green group. “It showed how with everyone working together we can make a difference.”

Elderly residents at Ward Court along with other people in the area and staff from the pharmacy based at the health centre were among those who joined in the celebrations. Rastrick councillors who backed the campaign were also invited and Coun Craig Whittaker was at the event.

Chairman of Rastrick Cares, Mr David Stevenson, organised the catering and guests enjoyed Mediterranean tapas and a finger buffet. “It was good to get together and celebrate,” said Mr Stevenson. “It was certainly a worthwhile evening.”

Meanwhile residents are hoping to hear soon from Metro about bus services in Rastrick. Changes made to the services earlier this year have left many people with a restricted service or no service at all.

“If we have a positive result with Metro it will be well worth another celebration,” said Mrs Beal. The Carr Green and Crowtrees group is organising a Party in the Park on Carr Green recreation ground on Sunday, August 31.
