Building to a fair future in all Calderdale schools
School councils from across the area came together as part of a fairtrade event and to build closer relationships with each other.
The event saw eight councils attend at the Heath Training centre, Halifax to discuss the issues around fairtrade and how their school could support producers from developing countries.
Organised by head teachers Mary Hodges from St Joseph’s RC Primary School, Brighouse, and Duncan Hetherington from Withinfields Primary School, Southowram, the day could have seen the start of more school council’s working together across Calderdale.
“Everyone just had a fantastic time and there is now a tremendous base in place,” said Mrs Hodges. “It was the first time the event like this has happened.
“The pupils have come up with their own action plans to take back to their own school to spread the message about fairtrade.
“It was really successful and we hope to repeat it by bringing more school councils to events like this.
“We are also looking to the future and letting the councils visit one another’s schools so they work together and share their ideas and possibly introduce them into their own.
“This could develop into something very exciting and spread across the whole of Calderdale.”
The schools who attended were Cliffe Hill Community Primary, Carr Green Primary, Longroyde Junior, St Chad’s Primary, St Andrew’s Junior and St John’s Primary Academy.
