Brothers’ 100mph car crash was ‘unsurvivable’
Police investigate a RTA in which two people were killed on Woodside Road, Wyke
A coroner has ruled that a drink driver was responsible for the death of his brother when he crashed into a large tree in Wyke after losing control at more than 100mph.
Yorkshire Regiment soldier Sam Blowman, 27, was in the passenger seat of a Ford Focus driven by his brother Christopher, 31, when it crashed shortly after a pursuit by a police Vauxhall Astra on Woodside Road in May, 2012.
The Focus had overtaken the police car in Manchester Road and accelerated towards Wyke, leaving the police some distance behind as they gave chase an inquest heard.
Post mortem tests revealed that Christopher had consumed the equivalent of about six pints of beer. There was evidence that he had recently taken cannabis.
Sam had consumed the equivalent of seven pints of beer as well as ecstasy and cocaine. The brothers, from Wibsey, Bradford, died from multiple injuries.
Accident investigator Robert Crispin, of West Yorkshire Police, said the driver had lost control on a left hand bend and hit a lamp-post and then the tree. He described the impact with the tree as “horrendous” as it split the car in two.
“In 23 years of investigating serious and fatal accidents, this was one of the hardest impacts to a vehicle I have seen.It was totally unsurvivable,” he said.
The involvement of police was referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission which passed it back to West Yorkshire Police to investigate. No disciplinary action against the officer.
Coroner Professor Paul Marks recorded that Christopher Blowman died as a result of an accident after the vehicle had been driven at more than 100mph. He also ruled that Sam Blowman had been unlawfully killed.
