Bring on the angels

STREET Angels – a group of volunteers who help tackle anti-social behaviour – could soon be operating night time patrols in Brighouse.

The church-led initiative has operated successfully in Halifax for three years and following a meeting with Brighouse church leaders, the police and Halifax Street Angels it is hoped the scheme will be introduced in Brighouse in the New Year.

Two taster sessions are planned when the team from Halifax will be out on the streets of Brighouse with potential volunteers.

The chairman of Churches Together in Brighouse and Rastrick, the Rev Ian Coverdale, said the scheme could not go ahead in Brighouse without volunteers.

He stressed the volunteers were not there to do the work of the emergency services but to support them and provide a reassuring presence in the town centre.

A taster session is being held next Friday, followed by a second on Saturday, January 10.
