CHILDREN are being challeneged to create weird and wonderful creatures and people from potatoes.

Staff at Coley Garden Centre in Denholmegate Road, Coley, are running a potato modelling competition from March 20 until March 28 as part of the centre's Grow Your Own Potatoes Event.

Manager Tracy Robinson, said: "We will have the models on display in the garden centre and will ask customers to vote for their favourites via a ballot box.

"Although we don't have any hard and fast rules we are looking for models of famous people such as politicians and pop stars."

Children aged from four to 11 can enter the competition and entry forms are available from the garden centre. Forms can also be completed in-store when models are handed in to be displayed.

There are two age categories four to seven years and eight to 11 years. The first prizewinners in each age category will receive a certificate and a 5 gift voucher to spend at the garden centre.

Each winner's school will receive a WCF Phoenix bag of seed potatoes, a Burgon and Ball triple pack round potato planter and a Miracle-Gro Organic Choice potato and vegetable gro-sac to fill the potato planters.

The runner-up in each age category will also receive a certificate.

The closing time for entries to be submitted is 4pm on Sunday March 21.

Models will be displayed for one week, anonymously and customers will be asked to vote for their favourites.
