The Mayor of Calderdale Coun John Hardy and Calder Valley’s MP Craig Whittaker were among the guests at a recent open day hosted by Projex Solutions to promote apprenticeships in the region.

Projex Solutions an electrical, control and instrumentation design and installations provider has always been keen advocates of apprenticeships and held a debate surrounding the scope and capacity of apprenticeships, and how they help Yorkshire businesses grow.

Managing director Jamie Ashton started his life as an apprentice and credits this as the foundation of his successful career which is why he has taken on Lewis Copeland as an apprentice at the Thornhills Beck Lane business. Lewis said: “It has given me a great opportunity to learn a multiple of skills, improve my confidence and make a difference in a growing organisation.”

Mr Ashton said Lewis had been a credit to himself and the company on the projects he has been involved with, with minimum supervision he now completes a majority of tasks. He added: “The day was a great success, Mr Whittaker attending was an honour and receiving a visit and speech from the Mayor was an exceptional bonus. I completed my apprenticeship 18 years ago and since then the decline in companies running an apprenticeship program has led to a reduced skill set being available for the industries we work within.”

Mr Whittaker said apprentices were a great way to try and rebalance the economy, were a huge asset to business and the individual - providing a huge skill set to feed business needs.

He talked about how everyone needs to reach their personal best and how no one must be left behind. “Since I became the MP of Calder Valley I have been hugely impressed by the go-getting and dynamic leadership of some of the best Calder Valley businesses. I know that they are amongst the most innovative and responsive of any in our country.

“I have a very clear view about what my role has to be as an MP. It is not to complain or be a constantly niggling critic. Instead, I want to be the unequivocal champion of Calder Valley business and also the skill set needed to feed those businesses,” he said.

Since the recession and the increase of tuition fees at universities, apprenticeships are becoming more popular. Anyone interested in becoming an apprentice can contact them.
