Aid coming in spades for Bailiff Bridge green team

RESIDENTS are being urged to give their time by the bucketload by pitching in with a community garden project.

Calder Future has organised the Bailiff Bridge drive, on Saturday, June 5, as part of a series of annual improvement events taking place across Calderdale.

The scheme is run to help improve areas for the people living there.

Residents can help with the latest project to create a picnic area to complement the new Bailiff Bridge community centre, which is due to be completed in the near future.

Previous projects include the Bailiff Bridge Memorial Park, which was restored to its former glory when residents offered their help in spades. The space went on to win a national Green Flag award.

Malcolm Silkstone, founder and chairman of Bailiff Bridge Community Association, which is organising the work, said he believed the work being carried out was invaluable, adding: "What we are doing is making this village a better place to live for everyone in the area. We were very proud of the work which went into the Memorial Park and now we hope to create a new community space for everyone to enjoy.

"We ask that people bring a spade, shovel or some kind of gardening equipment and come on down to help out."

Volunteers should meet the the corner of Wakefield Road the Victoria Road in Bailiff Bridge at 10am. The event will mark the final leg of work on the community centre, which is being built with funds raised by people in Bailiff Bridge over 24 years.

The shell of the building has been provided by Barrett Homes as part of its development in Victoria Road - and now work will begin on the electrics, heating, plastering, plumbing and joinery.

On Saturday an open day was held at the centre to give people a chance to see what will be available.

Mr Silkstone said: "As well as people from the village there were representatives from different organisations and groups such as dance and music classes and lecturers who could be interested in using the centre."

Plans are being made for events to be held next year to mark the 25th anniversary since fund raising started. Mr Silkstone said he hoped it might co-incide with the opening of the building.

• Calder Future has also organised its annual 'River Day' in Brighouse on June 12.

Gavin Roberts, Calder Future's volunteer co-ordinator, said: "The River Day is all about cleaning up the rivers and our public spaces. We hope to get members of the community involved in cleaning up the area and the river."

Anyone who wants to help out at the River Day should meet outside the park cafe near the Bradford Road entrance to Wellholme Park at 11am.
