THE final cast list for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals might be assembled late but Brighouse’s Alex Spencer is itching to end a seven-month wait for his starring role at the O2 arena.
The 15-year-old is set to be one of just 30 Barclays Ball Kids rubbing shoulders with Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic in London at the glamorous eight-day finale to the tennis season.
Alex, who attends Brooksbank School Sports College, Elland, beat off stiff competition from thousands of youngsters across the UK to earn the right to star at the O2 from November 4 to 11.
Having been handpicked by six-time Grand Slam champion Boris Becker back in April, Spencer spent last week at a training camp at the Hampshire Health and Racquet Club.
“It was a really hard week but it was good,” he said. “You get the adrenalin of the game nerves but with excitement too.
“We were doing a lot of practice with ball rolling and with the towels this time which we didn’t do previously.
“It’s quite complicated. The first time I did it I didn’t really know what to do, it took some getting my head around it with the towel.
“All my mates have been saying it’s easy, but it’s just not as easy as it looks.
“I can’t wait for next month, I’m sure it’s going to be one of the best things I’ve done in my life.”
