IT might lead to the wars of the roses but one Brighouse florist is urging men NOT to give the red blooms to their sweethearts on Valentine’s Day.
Lesley Adams has banned red roses from her shop in a bid to encourage Brighouse men to be more imaginative on February 14.
It may seem like a classic case of a retailer shooting herself in the foot on one of the busiest days of the year for flower sales but Lesley is convinced she’s onto a winner.
In her opinion most women do not want to receive roses - red, white or any other hue - thinking them tacky and unimaginative.
“My shop, Simply Flowers, is going to be a red rose-free zone. Spending money on a lovely bouquet is the perfect romantic gesture but not if your wife or girlfriend thinks that the flowers are tacky.Women much prefer it if their loved ones give some thought to what they are buying rather than the usual red roses.”
To help men who are stuck for ideas, Lesley will put together personalised bouquets with specially-made IOU vouchers promising the recipient ‘breakfast in bed’, ‘the chance to go shopping without the kids’ or ‘an hour of housework’.
