A BRIGHOUSE teenager has been crowned young knitter of the year after designing a handbag inspired by her favourite celebrity.
Katie Lewthwaite designed and produced the knitted handbag based on the outfits worn by singer Taylor Swift in her videos. The finished product, which took eight weeks to make, was then featured in two knitting magazines and on the catwalk at Clothes Show Live at the NEC in in Birmingham.
The 15-year-old said she was thrilled to win the 13-15 category of the competition.
“I had been thinking of entering competitions but hadn’t found any suitable until this one. Knitting is becoming more and more popular particularly with younger people these days,” she said. “I was very excited to win and they made me feel very special.”
Katie who was up against five others was told by judges after the competition that she was a clear winner and it was obvious a lot of effort and thought had gone into the design.
“I have always liked knitting and have been doing it since I was ten-years-old when my mum taught me the basics. From that I just followed patterns and taught myself to do more complicated things,” she said.
Katie’s design has appeared in both Simply Knitting and The Knitter magazines.
