People wanting to send Christmas cards to former Brighouse High School student Katie Ingham need to have them posted by the end of this week.

Katie is working at Omaruru Primary School in Namibia as part of a year’s placement. She has been out there for seven weeks so far and has a lot to come to terms with.

Her working day starts at 6am and teaching starts at 7am until 1pm. Homework club runs from 5pm until 6pm followed by bedtime stories in the hostel from 7pm until 8pm.

Katie was paired with another girl, Kerry, who she would work alongside during her trip. But on Katie’s 19th birthday on October 14 Kerry decided she could not settle and flew back to England.

Katie is now flying solo and has taken on some of Kerry’s lessons to give the deputy head at the school some more time to find a replacement.

During her visit Katie has tried dune-boarding and saw the colonies of seals on the massive beaches at Swakopmund and Walvis Bay. Katie will join the other eight volunteers in Cape Town to celebrate Christmas on the beach.
