RASTRICK athlete and Paralympic hopeful Georgina Oliver is set to go up against some of the world’s top athletes as her quest to make the Great Britain Squad begins.
The 19-year-old will be competing at the BT Paralympic World Cup held at the Manchester Regional Arena on May 22.
Shown live on Channel 4, the former Rastrick High School pupil is scheduled to race in the T53/54 100m and 400m.
Having returned from her warm weather training with the Great Britain squad in Portugal, Georgina has gone straight back into action.
“Training is going well at the moment. This weekend I competed at the Stoke Mandevile stadium and it was my first competition this year.
“I’m going to Switzerland on May 15 and May 21 to two competitions then I arrive back in Manchester on May 21 for the BT Paralympic World Cup.”
She will be hoping to impress in the competitions leading up to the London Paralympics 2012 in 111 days time. The Great Britain athletics squad is announced in July.
The BT Paralympic World Cup is the largest annual international multi-sport competition in elite disability sport and will be broadcast by Channel 4.
Peter Eriksson, Aviva GB&NI Team Leader, said: “Everyone has been working hard over the winter to be in the best possible shape moving into this Paralympic Games year and we’re all excited about getting out there to compete.
“The BT Paralympic World Cup is an important competition in our schedule, because in addition to giving an opportunity to our more experienced athletes to lay down some markers against top quality opposition, it’s a great chance for some of our developing athletics to experience world class international competition as they look further down to the line to Rio 2016.”
The event schedule will see the Manchester Regional Arena host all events, starting with Athletics on May 22, followed by Wheelchair Basketball and Football 7-a-side on May 23-26. The Boccia match will be staged on May 24 and the Sitting Volleyball international match will be held on May 25.
