It's a red letter day for Town's swimmers
GETTING to this point has been long and tortuous but there can be little doubt that cutting the first piece of turf on the site of Brighouse's new swimming pool is a true landmark for the town.
By this time next year the new pool should be nearing completion ready for the predicted opening date of October 11. After all the delays, protests and controversy of recent years, it's no wonder there were cheers and jubilation as work finally got under way.
For too long Brighouse has been without a pool – and for too long before that Brighouse had to make do with a dilapidated, antiquated building that was an insult to the town's swimmers. Campaigners kept up a 30-year fight to keep the issue of Brighouse baths on the agenda and argue for improvements and it is in no small measure that, thanks to their persistence, the new pool at Wellholme Park will soon be taking shape.
Obviously there are worries about the visual impact on the park and the increase in traffic and car parking. Work will have to be done to allay the fears of residents on Bradford Road that the quality of their lives will be adversely affected.
But extensive consultation has already taken place on the site of the pool and it is expected that further consultation will take place next year regarding how it operates. It is to be hoped that the concerns of residents will be expressed and heeded but in the meantime Brighouse is in a mood for celebrating its red letter day.
