Members from Brighouse attended the West Yorkshire West Trefoil Guild 35th Annual Meeting at St Paul’s Church, Sowerby Bridge.

The annual report for 2015 was presented by chairman Lyn Brooman.

She told everyone about the many interesting events that each guild had taken part in including fundraising, meals out, theatre trips and helping at Rainbow and Brownie meetings.

Escape from Alcatraz was the title for the guest speaker, Jackie Thompson.

She said that she remembered all the adventures she had enjoyed in guiding during her youth and that she still relishes new challenges.

Inspired by David Walliams swimming the River Thames in 2013 for Sport Relief - she took up the challenge of open water swimming.

She trains regularly in the pool and has taken part in open water swimming events in Lake Windermere, Anglesey and Northumberland.

However her highlight was when in 2014 she successfully swam the 3km (1.8 miles) from Alcatraz Island to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

An added excitement was a close encounter with an oil tanker - the Polar Endeavour.

Jackie achieved a personal ambition and also raised £2,550 for the charity Womankind Worldwide.
