BRIGHOUSE Gala committee is planning to make a permanent tribute to the organisation’s long-serving treasurer Mr Robert Sutcliffe who died in August.
A minute’s silence was held in honour of Mr Sutcliffe at the start of the committee meeting on Monday when the proceeds of this year’s Gala were handed out to more than 40 local organisations and charities.
Retiring chairman Mr Philip Poole said: “By our reckoning Robert gave 35 years’ service to the Gala and our new chairman Peter Charles will be looking at ways in which his memory can be honoured at the Gala.”
Mr Poole said he was delighted that so many organisations were represented at the meeting at Hove Edge Bowling Club and were now regularly involved in the Gala.
This year’s Gala, held in June, made more than £19,000 which was handed back to local organisations and charities - an increase of £2,000 on last year’s figure.
“There has been a steady increase in the amount raised at the Gala - it just seems to go from strength to strength,” said Mr Poole. “This year’s event was a huge success.”
“We now have a lot of information stands at the Gala and that all helps to bring in revenue for the general pot.”
The new Gala committee is: chairman Peter Charles, vice-chairman Steve Sykes and treasurer Christine Fletcher.
