BRIGHOUSE teenager Emilie Large is hoping to raise funds and awareness of a charity close to her heart while carrying out her duty as the town’s gala queen.

Emilie who was last year’s attendant returned to the auditions at Prego’s, Brighouse, in a bid to raise vital funds for Highbury School, where she volunteers one day a week.

The Rastrick school is trying to raise £250,000 to build a new hydrotherapy pool and has been chosen as the charity of the year by members of Brighouse Ladies’ Circle.

Emilie was selected as the queen after appearing confidently at the audition run by members of Brighouse Gala committee and Brighouse Ladies Circle.

The 18-year-old said: “It was easier this year because I did feel more confident. Last year I was shy and didn’t know much about the process. I was still shocked when they told me I had been picked because I thought they might let someone else have a go because I had already been in the car and done the parade when I was attendant last year.”

The A-level student at Rastrick High School wants to use the status to raise the much needed funds for Highbury.

“I know throughout the year Robyn Park-Ward who was queen last year was in the community awarding things but I want to do that and hopefully to do a lot more of it.

“I want to get the message out there about Highbury because I don’t think a lot of people know about it because it is tucked away in Rastrick. But I think once people hear about what they are trying to do and why hopefully they will give some money towards it,” she said.

Emilie has always wanted to be gala queen and said her family was delighted to hear that she had been selected. “They were pretty happy when I told them and this year one of my aunts from London will be coming up for the gala,” she said.

Emilie will be accompanied by Georgina Thornton of Rastrick who is 16-years-old. The Huddersfield New College student said she was excited.

They will have their hair and make-up done on the day by stylists Park Row hairdressers in Brighouse. Emilie’s flowers will be arranged by Simply Flowers and Georgina’s will be done be Lisa Bennett, who owns Eliza’s Flower Basket in Northowram and is a member of Brighouse Ladies’ Circle.
