HEAVY rain has swollen the beck causing the water level of the ford on Thornhills Beck Lane to rise dangerously.

This picture was sent in by reader Lindsey Merrifield of two people stranded on their car at the ford.

Police have urged motorists to avoid the area.

Inspector Simon Spencer, from Calderdale Police, uged drivers to take extra care out on the roads and to watch out for swollen fords as they could be dangerous.

The river Calder remains on flood alert from Todmorden to Brighouse as the Environment Agency warns communities to be prepared for the possibility of flooding later today.

Heavy downfalls are forecast into this evening (Monday) with experts predicting river levels could rise quickly this evening around 8pm, peaking at midnight as a result of heavy isolated downpours.

There is also potential for some surface water flooding where water is unable to drain away.

The Environment Agency will closely monitor the situation and are expecting to issue flood warnings.

Calderdale Council has cleared gullies this morning and placed sandbags along routes most likely to flood. The highways team is on standby.

Anyone in a flood risk area can contact the Environment Agency on their Floodline 0845 988 1188.
