When speaking to Brighouse and Clifton residents about the issues that matter most to them, there is one concern that is raised with me time and time again: road safety.
Residents will be aware of the serious road safety concerns that exist on primary routes such as Halifax Road, Bradford Road and Clifton Common/Highmoor Lane.
In addition to these roads, there are also significant concerns about speeding throughout other parts of the ward – although Clifton village and Hove Edge instantly spring to mind, there are concerns in almost every single community across Brighouse in relation to road safety.
Protecting the safety of residents, particularly children and the elderly, should be an absolute priority for the Council – road safety should be an area where the Labour-run Council are increasing capital investment and demonstrating that they are on the side of those communities that are constantly blighted by speeding motorists.
However, despite spending well over £100 million investing in new projects, spending on road safety does not appear to be one of the Council’s priorities.
What you may ask, is more important than spending money on road safety projects? The answer, according to Labour, is a new Library in Halifax and the Piece Hall project which attract total funding of a staggering £27million. I’m sure that Brighouse residents share my great disappointment that such a huge figure is made available for these projects in Halifax when the Council claim that there is no money for road safety schemes here in Brighouse.
Conservatives believe that spending on road safety should be a priority. I share the concerns of a great number of Brighouse residents on this issue and that is why I will be distributing road safety surveys across the ward over the coming weeks – these will give residents an opportunity to share their thoughts on this issue and to suggest how we might tackle this problem together.
Each community has different concerns and so it should be down to local people to decide what the specific solutions are in their particular area. Following feedback from residents, we will then be in a position to develop the policies to address your concerns.
Along with my colleagues from the Rastrick and Hipperholme and Lightcliffe wards, I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this issue. Please email email@example.com if you would like to share your opinions in the meantime.
Street market a great success
Last Saturday’s Street Market was a great success and provided us with yet another opportunity to showcase our town centre to people from outside the area.
I spoke to a number of visitors to Brighouse who commented upon how clean the town centre was looking and how lovely many of the flower arrangements were.
Great credit has to go to the traders who continue to make these events such a success, and to all of those who work so hard to keep the town centre looking so appealing.
