A RASTRICK family has presented a cheque for more than £10,000 to Overgate Hospice.
Rachel Bray raised £10,180 in memory of her husband Jez who died from a rare form of stomach cancer at the age of 52 last August.
Rachel said her aim was to raise around £6,000 for the Elland hospice where he received care for two years.
But after the event held at the Casa she was gobsmacked to realise that she had exceeded her target.
Laura Whitham, third party fund-raiser at the hospice, who collected the cheque said: “I think Rachel was only expecting to raise £6,000 but she really went to town on it.
“The tickets all had a picture of Jez on them and obviously she spoke to Mandy Barwick and got lots of great contacts so it just exceeded all expectations.
“It is such an amazing amount of money. The amount raised by people with donations to the hospice over 12 months is £80,000, so to put it into context, Rachel raised an eighth of that amount - with just one event.
“The hospice needs to raise £5,000 per day to operate so with the amount Rachel raised she has paid for the costs to run it for two days. This money is gratefully received and Rachel is now hoping to do it again next year.
“We made the cheque presentation at the hospice with all Rachel’s family present and we gave her a cheque back to say thank you.”
