PARKS and green areas in Brighouse are some of the finest in the UK.

Bailiff Bridge Memorial Park and Wellholme Park were awarded the Green Flag status which is the benchmark national standard for parks and green spaces in the UK.

Calderdale Council’s senior technical officer Samantha Ward said: “The scores this year are higher than ever with Bailiff Bridge achieving the second highest mark available in the award of 79 – just one mark of achieving the top 80 plus standard.

“This means we stand shoulder to shoulder with many other areas across the UK including The Royal Parks. This is a great accolade for everyone who has been involved.”

Wellholme Park retained the award for a consecutive sixth year and has not been formally judged will be subject to a mystery visit from judges any time through to early 2012.

Councillors and staff from Calderdale Council made special presentation to workers in the individual parks.

Chairman of the Bailiff Bridge Community Association Malcolm Silkstone and gardener Glen Lyon at Wellholme were rewarded for keeping the areas to such a high standard.
