Brighouse has some of the best parks in the UK - and that’s official.
Bailiff Bridge Memorial Park, Wellholme Park, Brighouse, and Shibden Estate, near Hipperholme, are among a record-breaking 1,447 parks and green spaces that will receive a prestigious Green Flag award this Friday.
Also receiving the award in Calderdale are Centre Vale Park in Todmorden, Manor Heath Park and Jungle Experience in Halifax, Ogden Water Country Park in Ogden, and The People’s Park also in Halifax.
The national award, handed out by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country.
A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to visitors that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.
The Shibden Estate has more than one reason to celebrate. The Grade II registered park has also won the prestigious national Green Heritage Award for the fourth year running.
Sponsored by English Heritage, the Green Heritage Award is presented to sites of special historic importance, which demonstrate best practice in care and upkeep.
Last year Bailiff Bridge achieved top marks in the Green Flag awards for 2012-13 scoring 80 per cent in the national award.
All seven of the parks have retained the award showing that they have high standards of community involvement, presentation, maintenance and cleanliness, heath, safety and security, environmental sustainability, conservation of heritage and nature, marketing strategy and overvall management.
Calderdale Council’s spokesman for Communities, Coun Steve Sweeney, said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive a Green Flag Award for an incredible seven parks across Calderdale.
“This award recognises and highlights that people across the borough are benefitting from green spaces of the very highest quality, and reflects the hard work of the Safer, Cleaner, Greener team.
“The green flags will be raised this week to celebrate Love Parks Week – encouraging people to visit and take pride in their local park.”
Coun Pauline Nash (Liberal Democrat, Skircoat), said: “I’m delighted that once again the hard work of staff in the Communities Directorate, who look after our parks, has been recognised. The quality of their work has led to the awarding of a number of nationally recognised Green Flag Awards.”
