STUDENT Emily Barrett was one of two pupils from high schools in Brighouse chosen to attend a Rotary Young Leadership Award course at Hebden Hey near Hardcastle Crags.

Emily, who studies at Brighouse High School, gave a talk to members of Brighouse Rotary Club about the course, how it will assist with her character development and her ambition to join the British armed forces and attend the Royal Military College at Sandhurst.

She was thanked by Brian Gay who said he was impressed at how the course had helped young people.

l Brighouse Rotary Club is one of organisations taking part in the Shoebox Christmas Appeal organised by the Rotary Clubs of Calderdale and the Halifax Courier.

The shoeboxes filled with toys, toiletries and food will go to children, families and vulnerable people in Calderdale. Tesco in Brighouse is one of the drop-off points. For full details see next week’s Echo.
