Retiring Rastrick High School head teacher Helen Lennie was served up a sweet surprise at a tea party, hosted and catered for by ex-student Andrew Holt.

Andrew, who left the school about eight years ago, returned to plan, prepare and deliver an afternoon tea fit for a queen, serving delicacies such as chocolate delice, lemon tart, macaroons, cupcakes, cream tea scones, lemon drizzle cake and black treacle cake.

Helen Lennie has been head teacher at Rastrick High for the past 12 years, leading the school from strength to strength and was totally unaware of the event until she was brought down to what she thought was a school meeting. Over 60 staff eagerly awaited her appearance in the school’s Silver Service Café. She was ‘bowled over’ and thrilled beyond belief.

In turn, Andrew was delighted to be able to ‘give something back’ to his former school.

“Food has always been a passion of mine and leading the surprise tea party, and delivering a training session for RHS hospitality students on the art of ‘afternoon teas’ has further developed my repertoire. Passing on my skills and having the ability to help and assist students who would like a career in catering is an area of interest and my French classical training will most definitely have helped them develop as budding chefs.”
