Part of Brighouse’s heritage has been recovered thanks to the quick thinking actions of the police.

Stone thieves stole a bulk of toppings from outside Alms Houses in Halifax Road, which have been there since 1895. Officers have now recovered the stone following a three day investigation and plans are in place to repair them and install steel bolts so this cannot happen again.

Councillor Colin Stout (Ind, Brighouse) said it was a distressing discovery for the residents when they realised that all the toppings had been stolen. “We are extremely grateful to the police for their hard work and time in finding the culprits.

“The outside looked a mess following the thefts and it is not just the heritage but the expense of having to replace them.”

He said this wasn’t the first time that stone thieves had targeted Brighouse.
