A number of trees have been hacked down in Wellholme Park, Brighouse, by someone with an axe.
An investigation has been launched into the spate of criminal damage near to the BMX track at the park in Bradford Road.
Phillip Schofield from the Safer, Cleaner, Greener team, has stepped up patrols. “We don’t tend to get a lot of vandalism in this location but it looks like they have also been digging with the possibility of setting everything on fire.
“They weren’t particularly large trees but I am concerned that people are in the park on an evening with an axe. This is a popular spot for youngsters and dog walkers. They have also attacked quite a large mature tree and if they don’t know what they are doing someone could get seriously hurt or even killed.”
He said the culprits had obviously gone with the intention of chopping the trees over the weekend, April 19 and 20. “The damage in itself is substantial and if it was a one off incident then it can be sustained but if it’s not then we can’t sustain it. My main concern is the possibility of someone getting injured,” he said.
Councillor Colin Stout (Ind, Brighouse) said he was going to get some saplings from the Woodland Trust to replace them and is asking for volunteers to help plant them.
Sergeant Dean Maddocks of the Lower Valley neighbourhood policing team said: “We will be stepping up patrols in the park over the next few weeks.”
